Boomkat Product Review:ĭetroit resident Sixto Rodriguez recorded this album in 1969 and it all-but disappeared thereafter, only to become a counter-cultural touchstone in South Africa years later - supposedly due to word of mouth. Listening through the full album, one of the first things to strike you will be the strong Dylan influence that seeps through these tracks, with Rodriguez channelling a similar cadence and firing off lyrics at a similarly prolific rate, and even though he can't match Bob's writing in terms of quality, this is not a man who should have been so ignored in the Northern Hemisphere for all these years. David Holmes brought Rodriguez wider recognition when in 2002 he picked the album's ace opening track, 'Sugar Man', for his Come Get It, I Got It compilation. Having gone multi-platinum (unbeknownst to the artist himself) Rodriguez received no royalties, but after being rediscovered by a journalist in 1996, the songwriter embarked upon a South African tour, finally reaping some of the rewards he deserved.
